ELET3120 (EL31L) - COMMUNICATIONS CIRCUITS (4credits)

Pre-requisite: ELET2120 (EL22C)

Objectives: An applied study of the basic building blocks of modern

communications circuits and systems.

Syllabus: Communications fundamentals - review of complex waves; rf

building blocks; types of modulation; filters; oscillators; mixers; if

amplifiers. Amplitude modulation - am circuits; suppressed carriers;

single sidebands; transmitters; modulators; detectors; tuned & superheterodyne receivers. Frequency modulation - angle & phase modulation; demodulators; transmitters; receivers. Pulse modulation -

pam, pdm, ppm; multiplexing. Antennas - transmission lines; antennas; propagation. Communications systems - tv; stereo broadcasting; data communications & systems

 

Teaching: Two (2) contact hours and four (4) laboratory hours, per week

Examination: One 2-hour written paper 60%

Two equally weighted 1-hour course tests 20%

Laboratory 20%
